Matthew Layman, affectionately known as Matty, bleeds blue and white and is celebrating his 35th year at camp! He began his Camp IHC journey in 1991, at the tender age of 6, when he was Camp IHC's youngest camper ever! Matty will tell you that his 10 years as a camper were among the best years of his life. 

Matty is the ‘real deal’ – an individual who has experienced first hand both the joys and challenges of being a sleep away summer camp camper. Because of this valuable experience, Matty effortlessly relates to campers and their families, and can offer an intimate understanding, as well as comforting advice that eases both campers and parents through the early years of their summer camp experience.

In addition to his valuable years as a camper, Matty has also assumed a number of roles over the last 25 years as a staff member, including Cabin Specialist, Group Leader, Program Director, Head Counselor, Assistant Director & Camp Director. Matty’s attention to detail, along with his natural ability to connect with campers and staff has made him an obvious choice for full time employment at Camp IHC, and he is now a valuable asset to our year round Leadership Team.

Matty grew up in Marlboro, New Jersey. He attended Johnson and Wales University, graduating in 2006 with a Bachelors Degree in Hospitality and Business Management, following in the footsteps of his father the famous "Uncle Butchee". During the winter months, Matty is responsible for hiring our exceptional staff in his role as a Staff Recruiter. He travels both within the United States as well as to Europe, to interview and subsequently recruit staff members that meet the quality that IHC expects. Matty also plays a major role in developing and providing outstanding on-going staff training and supports and assists in the execution of Pre and Post season groups.

Matty is an active member of the American Camping Association. He is on the EPIC committee, Tri-State Program Committee, Scope Dinner Committee, and Coach/Mentor for Project Morry.

Matty is an exceptionally warm and loving person. He is loved by all at IHC. We are blessed to have him as a former camper and an ongoing leader.
