Lake Camp at Indian Head offers young campers entering grades 2 through 7, a broad range of exciting experiences. The Lake Camp program is designed to help children develop basic skills and build the foundations for further development as they mature.
Each camper participates in a balanced program of activities and instruction in sports, arts, aquatics and outdoor adventures. Campers have the opportunity to sample the widest possible array of activities. As campers get older, the elective portion of the program increases. The 3-to-1 ratio of campers to counselors ensures that each youngster receives plenty of individual attention and personalized instruction. The adjustment of our first-year campers is carefully monitored by a specially trained, mature staff, in order to ensure success.
Indian Head Camp’s programs and experiences are fun for campers of all ages. However, teenagers have different needs and skill levels than younger children.
On Hill Camp, youngsters entering grades 8 through 10, find opportunities for new and different experiences, appropriate to their age and maturity. By offering this kind of program for adolescents, Indian Head balances the spirit of a traditional camp community with age-appropriate experiences.
In Hill Camp youngsters can individualize their summer program by choosing elective activities three days a week giving them more time in the areas they enjoy most. Group activities are provided in order to maintain a strong feeling of friendship and camaraderie. The older campers also serve as role models for younger campers by exercising leadership in “all-camp” special events.
Hill Campers enjoy a wide array of trip experiences. Adventures in the Adirondack Mountains in New York State, rock climbing and mountain biking overnights along with trips to places like Boston and Virginia Beach keep life exciting for our older campers. The tripping program culminates with our unique, Tribe West Program, a four-week trip throughout the western United States.
A unique opportunity offered at Indian Head Camp is our Tribe West Program, for campers entering 10th grade. The Tribe West experience is the culminating trip for our outdoor adventure program. After two years on Hill Camp, a wide array of trip experiences, and outdoor adventures in the Adirondack Mountains, our Tribe West campers take their skills out west for a four-week journey.
Campers spend the first two weeks as a part of Hill Camp, sharpening their hiking, mountain biking and climbing skills with their Tribe West staff members. They then depart for an incredible outdoor adventure that will take them through Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California. While out west, our Tribe West campers get to experience hiking in the Grand Canyon, white water rafting on the Colorado River, camping out in Yosemite National Park, and of course sightseeing in Las Vegas and San Francisco.
Once they reach their final destination out west, the Tribe West campers return to Indian Head for the final ten days of camp, just in time for Olympics and closing ceremonies. The Tribe West program combines the best of both worlds, creating memories that last a lifetime.
The Indian Head CIT Program is geared to offer campers entering 11th grade the best of both camping worlds… part camper and the beginning of real counseling.
Times for sharing experiences and camp fun and times for serious discussion of day-to-day camp responsibilities are provided. CITs receive leadership training and then spearhead many major camp special events such as the annual camp Sing and Olympics. The transition from camper to counselor can often be difficult. It is especially challenging if no groundwork has been done to prepare the camper for the change. In a word, “it is tough to work somewhere that has always been a great place to play.”
In light of this and Indian Head’s commitment to bridging the years between being a camper and responsible counselor, the Counselor-In-Training (CIT) Program provides one of the building blocks towards successfully making this very difficult transition. It is often a multiple year process involving the CIT Program as well as a summer or two out of camp in an alternative experience.
